Complete VPP — Integrated EE + DR Measurement and Payment

Prepare for Summer 2024. You can manage, measure, and deploy Energy Efficiency (EE) and Demand Response (DR) integrated into Fleet Manager™ and FLEXmarket® products.

Key Benefits

  • Utilities: Maximize utilization of distributed energy resources with load-shaping, event-driven dispatch, utilize energy efficiency as a hedge against peak energy market costs, and increase confidence / forecast impacts.
  • Aggregators / Contractors: Capture the complete value potential from virtual power plants to get paid for energy efficiency and demand response against capacity and T&D, and demand response as a hedge against peak energy market costs.
  • Customers: Encourage adoption by enabling customers to capture the full value provided to the grid to lower upfront costs and reward operational behavior.

Enable Fully Integrated Demand-Side Virtual Power Plants

The Complete VPP: Measure long-term energy efficiency (EE) and event-driven demand response (DR) as stand-alone or integrated resources while maintaining correct attribution of impacts.

Maximize Value: Encourage FLEXmarket VPPs and integrated programs that maximize grid impacts and customer value by load shaping throughout the year as a hedge on capacity investments and by responding to peak events to hedge energy market exposure.

CAISO Tariff Approved: The FLEXmeter® methods comply with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) tariff for demand response.

Features

The Complete VPP solution enables accurate measurement of EE and DR and calculates payments for the entire value stack while preventing double counting, encouraging the market to optimize for maximum grid impact.

  • FLEXmeter: Developed in collaboration with the CAISO and The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), FLEXmeter provides reliable measurement of demand response.
  • Integrated EE and DR Methods: The FLEXmeter creates Open-Source hourly baselines, including site-matched comparison groups, to accurately measure net impact to load for EE and DR impacts.
  • Correct Attribution: With the integration of Complete VPP and the FLEXmeter, savings can be attributed to the correct intervention to avoid double counting. This ensures that utilities can pay for the value of energy savings achieved based on correct attribution to the price signal driving the behavior. Example: The Complete VPP accurately tracks a smart thermostat's year-round operation, capturing its consistent daily EE load shaping (more frequent but lower value) and the distinct impact of demand response events (less frequent but higher value).
Measure and manage Energy Efficiency (EE) and Demand Response (DR) events, and attribute savings correctly.

Benefits

Utilities / Grid:

  • Maximize the utilization of distributed energy resources by encouraging both long-term load-shaping and event-driven dispatch.
  • Utilize energy efficiency as a hedge against capacity and T&D, and demand response as a hedge against peak energy market costs.
  • Increase confidence in the resource and ability to forecast impacts.

Aggregators / Contractors:

  • Capture the complete value potential from virtual power plants to get paid for both energy efficiency and demand response impacts.

Customers:

  • Encourage adoption by enabling customers to capture the full value provided to the grid to lower upfront costs and fully reward responsive behavior.

Available for Summer 2024

  • Upgraded Functionality: EE and DR price signaling, measurement, and payment functionality will be an embedded part of the Recurve core platform, available to all customers. To activate these new capabilities, work with your Recurve team.
  • Ready for Summer 2024: All capabilities will be live and fully operational in time for the summer event period of 2024, ensuring that utilities, aggregators, and customers are equipped to respond to peak demand periods to promote grid reliability next summer.
  • Get Started Today: Now that you know this functionality will be available, work with Recurve to start up an event signal for your FLEXmarket or integrate DR with your current efficiency programs to deliver peak reductions to help manage grid reliability risk this coming summer.

Integrated Into Existing Products

  • Fleet Manager: All capabilities of the Complete VPP to measure long-term demand flexibility
and dispatchable demand response will be natively integrated into every Fleet Manager
platform. Users have a single dashboard to track combined savings, but also drill into
    specific projects and events.
  • FLEXmarket: Every FLEXmarket can integrate EE and DR into a complete VPP. FLEXmarket can send, receive, and respond to long-term and dispatchable event-driven signals.
